THE Place for Tapas

The prize for the best tapas in town, for menu selections and presentation has to go to KLIMA Miami and its contemporary gastronomy from Barcelona. It goes without saying they’re delicious as well.

The limited bar seating was expanded to accommodate more tapas lovers with two high top tables of 10 adjacent to the bar – ideal for people watching. It was very popular the night we were there with small groups of friends and couples. The area is welcoming, intimate, and the loungey music has just the right decibel level to enjoy conversation.

The tapas classics are here, and well done, from a Spanish tortilla and Jamon Serrano 5 Jotas, to ham croquettes and piquillo peppers.

Often, though, they’ll have a twist, like the to die for piquillo peppers stuffed with creamy mascarpone cheese, honey, and caramelized nuts.

More uncommon  offerings include the escalibada toast topped with a mélange of roasted vegetables that would make anyone a veggie lover; short rib cannelloni in a port reduction with parmigiano; and an egg – slow cooked, potato foam and sautéed oyster mushroom.

There are also specials each night. The night we were there it was an oxtail ravioli with puree that was a standout. The meat was melt in your mouth tender, the amount of sauce just right, and then there was the potato puree.

For those who like more American style light bites, there are the spicy mini prime burger made with veal and the tuna toast, their riff on tuna tartare on a crispy tortilla with chipotle, leeks and lime.

Dessert tapas are not overlooked. Choose a regional cheese plate with cheeses seldom found except possibly on cheese trolleys – like La Peral Blue from Asturias (northern Spain) and the Payoyo from Cadiz (Southern Spain).
Or there’s the orange infused crema catalana, like a crème brulee. There’s also a nutella brownie which I have to try next time.

Prices for tapas range from $2 to $22. There are excellent Spanish wines by the glass. In particular I recommend the Marques de Murietta 2010, at $14 for a 4oz ounce pour. Bottles start at $50 (red) and $45 (white).

It’s also a solid choice for Miami Spice. To give you an idea of the dishes, here are the short ribs. They taste even better than they look – delicious.
