What’s father’s passion? Here’s a list of 10 father’s day gift ideas that cover a lot of bases and budgets (good for self gifting too):
- Is he a boatsman? An ideal shop that’s bound to have something that pushes the button is Nautica Design Gallery in South Miami. If Coastal Living magazine had a store, this would be it. Think practical and stylish pieces for the galley kitchen, pillows, shell mirrors, serving utensils, totes.
- Men tend to love watches, thinking they can never have too many. Cartier just brought back its Calibre diverwatch in rose gold. Originally launched in 2010, the watch is said to continue to work even after 50 hours under water (even salt water) at a depth of 300 meters.
- Forget active sports. He’s about pampering. Give him a visit to Downtown’s Churchill’s barber shop Although it’s called a “barber shop,” it is so much more than that. Once you walk into Churchill’s, it’s as if you are entering another world – a world of old-world, wood-paneled, clubhouse-style men’s glamour, a fully stocked bar with free alcohol and free espresso, and a shelf full of art books, men’s fashion and news magazines. In this world, you can walk out looking your best, with a stylish haircut, a clean shave, or even a shoeshine, manicure/pedicure, facial or hair removal.
- Does he like his pampering surrounded by a lot of ladies? Marilyn Monroe nail boutique in Midtown is the place and the treatment is Wing Tip Relief. For $30 he gets a warm foot soak, foot and leg rub, scrub and moisturizing treatment. You can team it with a mani-pedi.
- Here’s a gift kids and grandkids can afford without any help. Very practical and sure to be appreciated is the Justin Power Stick in a choice of bright colors. It’s a small, lightweight smartphone battery charger and only $19.
- A present that everyone can enjoy that is, if dad likes cooking, is a Chinese cooking class where he can learn to be a “Wok Star” (stay tuned, I’ll be writing this one up next week). Eleanor Hoh, the owner and teacher, calls it a “no recipe” technique for busy lifestyles (I find most men are recipe adverse, prefering to make it up as they go so this would suit them just fine).
- One of the best gifts is something you’d never buy for yourself, a real splurge. How about a pair of shoes from uber luxe Berluti in the Design District? They can be bought as ready-to-wear or made bespoke from a variety of shapes, patinas and leathers, including alligator, ostrich, shark and lizard. These babies can set you back between $650 and $14,000 for the ready-to-wear shoes, and from $5,000 to $30,000 for the bespoke shoes.
- If dad loves shoes but there’s no Berluti budget or even close to it, then check out Norwegian company Swims’ loafers. They look something like Tod’s, but they’re water resistant, machine washable, and only $159 at Nordstroms. Don’t you love electric blue? (Thanks to the Miami Herald for this tip and the one about the power stick).
- Living in Florida you can never have too many sunglasses. Check out Randolph Engineering Sunglasses, an American classic, at Supply and Advise.
- And last but certainly not least, how about an Uber-Luxe day trip as recommended by the concierge at The Setai Hotel? We’re talking about a stunning high-speed Porsche-designed boat from Golden Yacht Charters, T.786-309-4964. Up to 4 guests can jump onboard the half-million dollar vessel, one of only 22 in the world, aptly named The Fearless 28. It’s a custom-designed 28′ powerboat styled by Porsche Design and is powered by a 550 horsepower V10 engine taken from the Dodge Viper. The top speed is 88 mph and a cruising speed of 40 mph.
