Taste of the Garden
Miami Beach Botanical Garden’s Taste of the Garden

One of the lushest times of the year at The Miami Beach Botanical Garden is also the time of the annual Taste Of The Garden Event...this year on Thursday, January 28th.  Here’s your chance to enjoy a magical evening on The Great Lawn in the Garden with tastes from premier restaurants such as Red Ginger, Via Verdi and Apiero along with Ken Lyons’ Lyons and Lyons Catering and his Petite Marche on South Beach plus many more.  There are also wines and cocktails to match plus beer by Estrella Damm.  If that isn’t enough, there’s entertainment and a fabulous silent auction (snag deals from some of Miami’s top restaurants, etc.)  And it’s all for a good cause, The Miami Beach Botanical Garden.  The event is 6:30 to 9:30 P. M., $90 per person and $85 for Garden Members BEFORE January 25; $100 after that and this includes complimentary valet parking.  Tickets may be purchased on line at mbgarden.org or call The Botanical Garden at 305-673-7256.

2016 is off to a sweet start with one of my candidates already for the Best Desserts of this year (click here for last year’s Best list). It’s the almond macaron ice cream sandwich at Proof Pizza and Pasta, 3328 North Miami Avenue (T.786-536-9562) . It was our dessert at lunch along with shaved brussel sprout salad with apple cider, pecans, gorgonzola, and dried cranberries — a winner, and a delicious garganelli with tomato sauce, spicy pork sausage, toasted fennel and parmigiano. Prices at lunch at this very casual eatery range from $12 to $17 for appetizers, pizzas and pastas.

Miami has been bested in the donut department by its Broward neighbors — Mojo Donuts and Rhino Donuts. Until now. To the rescue, The Salty Donut at 29 NW 24th Street. It’s a popup, a food truck in a makeshift garden right now,but that doesn’t seem to matter to its growing fans who come exclusively for the donuts, donut holes, espresso, latte and Mexican coke (um, coca cola). I say “right now” since they plan to open a real retail store around May in what will be the Wynwood Arcade. But let’s talk about the real story, the donuts. Flavors include crowd favorites (sell out quickly), the brown butter and salt and the maple bacon. I opted for the baked chocolate that’s chocolate cake, chocolate ganache glaze and cocoa nibs. It tastes like a frosted, super moist brownie, is just 120 calories and gluten free as well. Good, but my favorite was the traditional buttermilk made from brioche dough. The best buttermilk cake donut ever — chewy, yeasty, just the right amount of sweetness. On my list — but alas sold out — were what they call “spiked out” holes in two flavors, nutella hazelnut and coquito made with Puerto Rican spiked eggnog and sugar. Other varieties include Boston cream, guava and cheese and Mimosa.  The Salty Donut is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Best to get there early when they have all of the flavors, though they do restock throughout the day. Donut prices range from $2.00 to $3.25. Holes are $5 for a half dozen.
