Caviar Russe, an Outstanding Lunch

Caviar Russe Miami

Those of you of a certain age, lovers of Jackie Kennedy and caviar will remember Jackie’s caviar diet. Said to watch her weight “with the rigor of a diamond merchant counting his carats,” she was known for eating a meal a day – a single baked potato stuffed with Beluga Caviar and sour cream.  All this came to mind as I went to check out the new jewel of a lunch and dinner spot, Caviar Russe Miami at the Four Seasons, 1441 Brickell Avenue (T.305-902-6969) and found an outstanding prix fixe lunch.

Small and elegant, Caviar Russe also brings to mind watering holes for the famous “Ladies who Lunch”, designer attired socialities and wanna bes in New York City in the 80’s and early 90’s. It’s all about an “opulent” theme with  white leather and gold adorned bar stools, a hand-blown glass chandelier hanging from a gold-leafed dome and Bernaudaud white and gold charger plates. Not surprisingly,  the new spot is the Miami outpost of Caviar Russe in New York which won a Michelin star last year. The kitchen in Miami is headed up by uber talent David Valencia whose pedigree includes working with famed Michelin starred French chef Alain Ducasse.

If you want to do the caviar diet (just skip the potato), you can order an ounce of caviar starting at $95 (for the Caspian Sea Classic Osetra) and a glass of Dom Perignon for $80  It comes with blini, Crème fraiche and  chive. Or, if you don’t have the budget for that but want to live the high life on a reasonable lunch budget, they now have what they call the “New”  NY power lunch menu for $35.  It’s filled with luxe foods, and of course with dollops of Caviar. It includes a martini or glass of wine (note, wine is lovely though pricey, so check before you order a second glass). To start there’s a choice of Caesar salad with caviar and quail egg, lobster with green apple and heart of palm or smoked salmon with crème fraiche. For a main, tuna or steak tartare with caviar or black cod with agave and avocado. Whatever we tried was exceptional in taste and presentation.

And one of the best things yet Caviar Russe serves from 12-10pm Monday through Thursday. Friday 12 -11pm and Saturday 6pm -11pm. The Power lunch is served from from Noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can also order at their boutique next door to their restaurant on their online store www.Caviarrusse.com

On Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m. they have what they call DOM Fridays (you know what that stands for – Dom Perignon) for $25 a glass/ $100 a bottle. A great way to end the week!

And by the way, in case you’re wondering, caviar only has 40 calories per tablespoon and though it is high in cholesterol and sodium, it does have a lot of health benefits according to “Calorie Count”:

No sugar
High in calcium
Very high in iron
Very high in magnesium
High in pantothenic acid
High in phosphorus
High in riboflavin
Very high in selenium
Very high in vitamin B12
