Bachour Bakery and Bistro

Bachour Bakery and Bistro

A world class French bakery in Miami? I’ve been on the search for one. Chocolate Fashion in Coral Gables does a good job. Zak the Baker’s croissants and pastries are also quite good . But the level of croissants, buns, brioches and petits gateaux one finds in France wasn’t happening here in a retail bakery…..until now! St.Regis Bal Harbour pastry chef and James Beard award semifinalist, Antonio Bachour, together with chef/partner Henry Hane have opened up Bachour Bakery and Bistro at 600 Brickell Avenue (T.305-330-6310).  While having only been open for 6 weeks, the bakery/bistro is getting all sorts of buzz through word of mouth. Below is a 411 on the new French bakery in the heart of Brickell.

On the fine pastry side, find all manner of fruit tarts and gateaux (small and specialty cakes). I tried the tarte au citron (lemon tart) which was quite good and lovely to behold, though they really shine with the morning pastries. We’re talking chocolate brioche filled with a custard like cream that lo0ks like a plump, whimsical mushroom; morning buns, rich with cinnamon; flaky, buttery croissants including  the crowd pleasing Nutella version that sells out almost as soon as they’re ready; petites loaf cakes in flavors like hazelnut with passion fruit curd. Then there are packaged cookies (chocolate sables, oatmeal), confections and savories like parmesan crisps to macarons, handpainted ganache bonbons, and chocolate and dulce de leche pearls. They’re ideal for hostess gifts.

Bachour isn’t terribly easy to find. It’s on Seventh avenue right off of Brickell, on the side of the Northern Trust Building. The space is small but dramatic, with a four story ceiling over the open kitchen where all the food is made and pastry display, hanging wooden contemporary lights, and table and high top seating. There’s also outdoor seating with umbrellas.

For those who want real food with their pastry, they serve breakfast and lunch and brunch all day on Saturday and Sunday. According to Hane everything is made in house, from jams and jellies to breads. The menu is eclectic, find everything from ribeye tartine, butiffara (their specialty sandwich with cilantro turkey and aji amaraillo), and their riff on Italian carbonara (Israeli couscous, pork bellly and egg) to Peruvian causa and falafel bowl. It’s all light fare — soups, small plates, tartines and sandwiches. And an emphasis here on beautiful plate presentations. For instance gazpacho comes garnished with edible flowers.  Brunch is a la carte. Brunch items include granola bowl, huevos rancheros, and egg jar (75′ egg, pomme puree, hollandaise foam and pork belly).  There are no alcoholic beverages as yet, but the liquor license should be on the way.

Prices are cafe worthy. All lunch and breakfast items are in the teens, breaking $20 on the salads if there’s an addition of chicken, ribeye steak or red shrimp  to a salad. Baked goods range from $2.50 to 3.75; coffees and other beverages from $3 to $6.

Bachour Bakery and Bistro is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  It’s a welcome addition to Miami. And if they can get the service right (more professional and friendly), then they’d have the complete package.

  1. Thanks for the review! Let’s see if the croissants are as delicious as from Buena Vista (www.buenavistadeli.com) at 4590 Northeast 2nd Ave – an unassuming place run by two French guys!

  2. I’ve been to Bachour Coral Gables several times for breakfast and fully intend to return with my niece who will be visiting from Providence, RI. Each time I had a unique, new and delicious experience. Plan to try lunch soon.
