Men’s Fashion: Luxury for Less

 luxury for less

by Steve Deitsch

Wearing a great suit can make you feel like a million bucks. And a luxury suit, like a classic suit from ultra high-end Italian designer Kiton, can set you back in the neighborhood of $7,000 – $10,000, although they can go much higher for bespoke suits. But with a little ingenuity, a sartorial gentleman can get luxury clothing for a lot less.

Here are some local options to consider:

The Premium Outlets (e.g. Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, FL ) – You can sometimes find ultra-luxury suits at the Neiman Marcus Last Call outlet store marked down by 50-65%. These suits are new, but check them carefully. Sometimes they have a stain or mark on them and all sales are final. They also usually have a good selection of other high-end clothes on sale, including luxury brands like Tom Ford, Brunello Cucinelli, Belvest, Zegna, etc. Also, the Premium Outlets have many other high-end outlet stores, many of which have very few locations in the United States, including Prada, Gucci, Loro Piana, Ferragamo, Barney’s New York, Hugo Boss, Jimmy Choo, etc., where all the merchandise is sold at a significant discount.

Vintage clothing stores or consignment shops – If you don’t mind wearing clothes that are pre-owned, you can save a lot of money. Stores like Out of the Closet in South Beach or in Midtown occasionally have a hidden treasure like a Prada shirt or Etro Polo or Hugo Boss suit, but it’s very hit or miss, and you might have to visit them quite a few times to find something high-end and that is in good shape. The good thing about shopping here is the prices. You can find a suit for under $50, and a shirt for under $10.

Luxury for less online – Ebay: This remains the king of discounted high-end fashion. There is a wide variety of high-end brands here, both new and pre-owned, at significant savings. For example, you can find a new Kiton suit for under $1,000 and a pre-owned suit for even less. It’s important to know your measurements, so you’ll know in advance from the description if it will fit.

Amazon – Who knew you could buy high-end men’s fashion on Amazon? You can find many high-end brands on here, including Kiton, although the discounts aren’t quite as steep as on Ebay. A new Kiton suit on here tends to run between $2,000 and $3,000 – still a significant savings off the retail price, and usually less than you’ll find it for at the outlets.

Ina NYC This is a high-end men’s (and women’s) consignment store in NYC from which you can buy online. They have very high-end pre-owned clothes at significant savings off retail. For example, they had several Tom Ford suits for around $1,000, which can cost well over $5,000 at retail. By comparison, a new Tom Ford suit goes for about $1,500 – $2,000 on Ebay.

StyleForum This is a men’s fashion site that has a huge following and there is an area to buy and sell clothes. The audience on this site is very style-savvy. Prices can vary widely on here for new and pre-owned clothing, but it is usually higher-quality or higher style than what you might find on the other sites. However, the discounts may not be as low as on Ebay.

Happy shopping!
