Fashion Hats

One of my favorite pastimes when I go to Paris is going to Bon Marche, the most upscale department store, and trying on their hats. They’re so flirty, feminine and elegant – and fun. For awhile there, hats weren’t so in fashion but that has changed thanks to Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, who has lent a new found “now” image to hats. And now, we have Miami’s very own former fashion editor who has stunning hats for any elegant occasion and made them accessible in price.

Suzy Buckley Woodward whom you may know as the former editor of Ocean Drive has launched a new site called Shapoh. Here you can find structured hats of all sorts including the new hybrid called The Hatinator. A cross between a traditional hat and a Fascinator (a type of headband with flowers or feathers sticking out), it has a tiny cap which serves as a base for often highly creative adornment – think flowers, feathers, loops, poms, swirls.

Buckley became interested in hats from going to the Kentucky Derby for years and always enjoying putting together a hat-to-toe look. In fact, after attending the Derby for several years as well as the lead up race, Kentucky Oaks, she managed to win the annual Longines Kentucky Oaks Fashion Contest. She felt that at lot more women would wear hats if they weren’t so pricey (often averaging $1000 if you have the top milliners).

Her site features hats from top international milliners ranging from Ireland’s Jennifer Wrynne, and China’s Elisabeth Koch to Australia’s Murley & Co and the Los Angeles based Arturo Rios.

I asked her if the hat should match other accessories or the clothes? “The hat should tie together the whole outfit, whether that means matching the outfit or complementing it, “she said. When you incorporate a serious piece of millinery into your outfit you shouldn’t be afraid to do a matchy matchy look.”

And how to care for a hat? Hat boxes I asked? She said that many of the new hats with flairs that extend high can’t fit into a box so the best is a hat stand.

Where, I asked her, in New York and Miami are the best places for hat watching. The New York Conservancy Lunch (called the “Frederick Law Olmsted Awards Luncheon) and here in South Florida the Vizcaya Preservation Lunch and polo matches in Palm Beach. The web site has a hat calendar of worldwide hat oriented events. I’d also add the Miami Beach Garden Club annual lunch. Other suggestions from you hat lover readers?

Fashion hats range in price from $125 to $1200 with most falling in the range between $200 and $400.

  1. I love this post. Finally somewhere to find original hats. Thank you for your post

  2. i never leave home, day or nite w/0 a hat…it is the easiest way to establish the fashion fact that you do NOT follow the herd…also, it makes a powerful statement and attracts men better than fragrance!
my uncle left a wife and 2 children for a woman he saw in in a café wearing a sheer black picture hat w a cascade of red cherries..
hats can cost very little and there is an endless variety of style that will suit you so hie to the shops at once…there is not A MOMENT TO LOSE!
