Looking for something different to do this weekend? How about An Evening of Water Ballet courtesy of the Momentum Dance Company Miami at The National Hotel or an evening learning how to dance the 1940’s swing (or watch others), burlesque, blues and rockabilly music in Wynwood? Here’s the scoop:
Miami’s very own Momentum Dance Company takes to the water on Saturday night at 7 p.m. with An Evening of Water Ballet. In the beautiful setting of the art deco National Hotel,1655 Collins Avenue, (T.305-532-2311) dancers will combine synchronized swimming, contact improvisation, and contemporary dance. The 45 minute performance includes last year’s hit Sparkle and a premiere work, Water Birds. Best yet, admission is free. Have a drink before or stay for dinner.
Or nearby check out The Sarsaparilla Club in The Shelborne Hotel, 1801 Collins Avenue, for some of their American dim sum (pork bun with housemade bacon, anything corn, beet and tomato tartare), the Asian steamed snapper, or the to die for banana cake with meringue.
Swing dance instruction, blues and rockabilly music, burlesque performances and vintage fashion for sale – it will all be there this Friday at Swyngwood, Step back in time for a vintage-inspired cultural immersion from the 1940’s in Wynwood sponsored by the South Florida Lindy Collective (SFLC). Here’s the cool lineup of what’s on tap:
Pitbull of Blues Band performing blues and rockabilly to keep the party hopping plus
- Burlesque performances by Miss Jenna Beth showcasing the class and sass of yesteryear.
- Rat rodders can enter Swyngwood’s Inaugural Rat Car Show to win a custom trophy
- Swyngwood’s Pomp Station will help attendees rock retro rockabilly hairstyles
- Vintage fashion and treasures available for purchase from the L.A. Boudoir pop-up shop.
- Mini pin-up photography sessions with Erika Nelly, Pin-Up Photographer featured in Delicious Dolls Magazine, Teased Pin Up Magazine, and Vintage Affair Magazine.
Swyngwood will take place at the funky Toe Jam Backlot (literally an open lot so go casual Wynwood style and probably best not to wear high heels). It’s at 150 N.W. 21st Street, on Friday, May 20, at 8 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are available online for at https://swyngwood.eventbrite.com or at the door for $20. Want to have a bite before or after? GK Bistronomie, 218 N.W. 25th St. (T.786-477-5151) is a new find, good for light bites, especially their Peruvian inspired dishes and it’s reasonably priced.
