Fabulous Friday: “The Mountaintop”

the mountaintop

For last season and so far this year no play at Gablestage has rated less than a “Very Good”, most have been “Excellent”, but The Mountaintop, winner of the prestigious 2010 Olivier award given to London theater,  gets the ‘Outstanding”. Hearing that the subject was Dr.Martin Luther King, I thought it’d be a historical narrative. Wrong. It’s really about ‘Michael”, the man (Martin’s Christian name) – his insecurities, challenges, and above all, the fear he faced when he got up everyday. “I feel we put Dr. King on a pedestal. By showing him as an ordinary person, we feel we can go out and do extraordinary things,” Katori Hall, the playwright was quoted in the Miami Herald as saying.

The Mountaintop imagines an encounter between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a maid at Memphis’ Lorraine Motel on the night before King’s 1968 assassination. It’s 90 minutes without interruption, and the time flies as the story evolves, taking unexpected twists, building to a crescendo.  In the end, there is some historical and social perspective, but mostly, it challenges us all to “take his baton” and  do our part to make the world a better place. The production runs until April 13. Don’t miss it.

  1. I have to say the play was fabulous, unforgettable. For some personal reasons I arrived to GableStage in a gloomy mood; 90 mn after, I was so enchanted and moved by the play, that I finally considered some difficult things can happen, but, it’s only details compare to the true essence of life.
