Fabulous Friday: Edouard Duval-Carrie Exhibit

Edouard Duval-CarrieAn exhibit worthy of the world class architecture of the Perez Art Museum, that’s the new show, Imagined Landscapes, of Haitian artist Edouard Duval-Carrie. Admittedly I like Haitian art for its narrative qualities, fluorescent colors, and expressiveness, but this is a different level, even for a star like Edouard Duval-Carrie. It’s dramatic, oversize, bold and beautiful. It can’t help but make you free proud that we have such a talented artist in our midst. This is a new departure for Duval-Carrie. The works are done on aluminum that has been painted black with drawings using a silver glitter pen and then coated with resin. Expanses are primarily a deep black, sometimes with splashes of turquoise, cobalt blue, shocking pink and a day glo orange. Lush foliage populates the images which refer to themes ranging from the colonial history of the Caribbean to the mystical and spiritual life, sometimes making a political statement.

The exhibition room is kept at low light, with even the sole window bearing a light screen. The effect is works that sparkle like jewels. Magical. Centerpiece of the space are two metal chandeliers, playful with their pink, white and gray resin flowers and fruits, a riff on ones one might find in baroque palaces. Edouard Duval Carrie said that he wanted to present the Caribbean as the “New Eden”, a fertile land of possibility. Looking at the exhibit and glancing through the window seeing the palm trees and bay, enjoying the balmy breezes from the terrace of PAMM surrounded by water and Miami’s dramatic skyline,  you can’t help thinking how we have our own Eden.

The Edouard Duval-Carrie exhibit runs from now to August 31. You can go and make an afternoon of it with lunch at Stephen Starr’s Verde restaurant, enjoying light entrees, salads or a beverage and good looking desserts. Transportation is easy thanks to the MetroMover which drops you at the door. Self parking is right below the museum and is a reasonable $2 an hour.
