More Karen’s Kudos August

osher paint party

This month brings more Karen’s Kudos in entertainment, beauty and food. From an artist painting party for beginners and intermediates to a perfect- for -Miami line of soaps and body cremes and Jean Michel Basquiat inspired menu, it’s all here.

Something different for the summer, a painting party – and I don’t mean to paint a house which would be no party. The Osher Learning Institute of the University of Miami in Coral Gables is having an Artist Paint Party (“acquaint and paint a watercolor”) on August 31 at 1 p.m. No experience required and no need to worry about supplies – they provide them and instruction (the teacher is very good — Jim Brennan, who was my instructor in a course last year). It’s $28 per person. For more information and reservations call 305-284-6554 or click here.

You can’t imagine the amount of beauty products pitched to me, most I quickly read about and move along. But when Jon Bresler, who formerly headed up Santa Maria Novella (and in fact, I interviewed him about what we need to know about hair care) and has his own company, LAFCO, introduces new products, I take note. In a very crowded marketplace for luxury soaps and body creams, his Sea and Dune collection stands out. Made from a blend of pure pressed coconut and olive oils at a family owned factory in Italy, they’re silky and creamy and feel luxurious to the touch. The liquid body soap is a great option to the bar, made from cold pressed Italian olive oil and a blend of pure botanical extracts. I also liked the body cream which was rich but not greasy, made from a base of argan, jojoba and shea oils and inflsed with orange blossom extract. All products are free of GMOs, sulfates, parabens, synthetics and dyes. But almost the best feature is the fragrance – clean, fresh and airy. Bar soap is $11 for 4.5 ounces; liquid is $30; and the body cream is $35. They’re available at www.LAFCO.com.

Love art and food? Then you’ll love the idea of a menu inspired by the work of Jean Michel Basquiat, part of the happenings at the Perez Art Museum Miami for its current exhibit of the renowned artist. Verde is offering a special three-course prix-fixe menu to honor the new ‘Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks’ exhibit  Executive Chef Kaytlin Brakefield translates the artist’s notebook-filled poetry fragments, wordplay and sketches with subjects of street life, themes of race, class and world history. . To start, guests can enjoy the Watermelon Carpaccio with muscadine grapes, feta, ver jus (also known as verjuice) and cilantro meant to represent the muted aspects of Basquiat’s notebook. As the main entrée, guests will have the Black and White Pagesmade from housemade fazzoletti, octopus and cacio e pepe with burgundy-toned octopus to accentuate the boldness of the black and white dish. The meal ends on a tropical, indulgent note with Coconut Tembleque with dark chocolate graffiti and gold leaf shaped like a three-pointed crown to reflect Basquiat’s cultural and career background as a graffiti artist. The menu is offered until October 16 and is $26.
