If you’re a man of style, you know that, although clothes make the man, it’s your grooming that separates the men from the boys. And if you’re a man of the 305 area code, you need to know about Churchill’s barber shop, in downtown Miami.
Although it’s called a “barber shop,” it is so much more than that.
Once you walk into Churchill’s, it’s as if you are entering another world – a world of old-world, wood-paneled, clubhouse-style men’s glamour, but also a world full of the latest men’s styling products, a fully stocked bar with free alcohol and free espresso, and a shelf full of art books, men’s fashion and news magazines.
In this world, you can walk in a slob and a short time later, walk out looking your best, with a stylish haircut, a clean shave, or even a shoeshine, manicure/pedicure, facial or hair removal.
The owner, Jose Goyanes, opened Churchill’s barber shop in 2003, and it remains an insider’s secret among professional men in the downtown area. Goyanes explained that, since he owns the building, he can afford to pay his staff better than other salons, thereby attracting and retaining high-quality stylists. That means that we, the men who discover this secret, get great haircuts and other grooming services. Goyanes also has invested quite a bit in the décor, and has installed a full bar, antlers and surfboards on the wall, and a sense that we’re not in 2014 anymore.
The stylists there are adept at cutting a wide range of men’s hair styles, but said that the current trends for men are beards and the comb-over, which is like an updated 1930s look, with a part on the side.
A regular haircut costs $25, and a deluxe shave (the kind with the hot towel and straight razor) is $30. Or a combination of the two can be had for $49. If you’ve never had a hot-towel, straight-razor shave before, after Churchill’s, you will wonder why you never started before.
