A Leading New Spa at 1 Hotel & Homes

1 Hotel & Homes South Beach is becoming one of the hot spots in town, almost always “buzzy”. They keep upping the ante, first snagging Tom Colicchio to oversee their restaurant, then getting a top New York boutique  to move in, going after the cool crowd with the rooftop pool and restaurant Watr (see my writeup on Sunday Funday), and most recently,  opening the first US outpost of luxe UK Bamford Haybarn Spa, a welcome addition to spas Miami. Valentia, a Spanish Gem

Grilled artichoke with Jamon Iberico and fried egg

Despite the big farm to table movement in the US, it’s still not easy to eat food products that have real taste, even in pricey restaurants. The kind of restaurants one finds in Greece, Italy and Spain — simple food where the natural flavors shine. At Valentia Miami, an import from Valencia in Spain, the potatoes taste like potatoes, the meat has a beefy taste, and the fish is fresh as can be. Plus, the chef has the right touch with the seasonings. The restaurant, at 1450 Brickell Ave, Phone: (786) 542-8098 opposite the Four Seasons Hotel, is attracting a growing and loyal clientele with next to no PR, social media or advertising. It’s word of mouth from happy diners who also appreciate the very good quality and value. Read Full Post & Comments »

Olla Miami, a Real Mexican Find

Duck mole

When I met Scott Linquist shortly after the opening of Coyo Taco in Wynwood he impressed me with his knowledge of and passion for Mexican cuisine. He told me how he took fellow restaurateurs on culinary tours to Mexico, and his plans for an authentic Mexican restaurant in Miami. He realized his dream at Olla Miami which opened late last year in South Beach, and it’s a “joya” (jewel). Don’t think Tex-Mex as in tacos, burritos and the like. This is the real thing in an ambiance that recalls cantinas one sees throughout the country – weathered timber walls painted in earth tones, hammered tin chandeliers, and mellow lighting.  Read Full Post & Comments »
